Karen Bockel stepped up as a freshman to find her place on the Arkansas team last year. During the indoor season, Bockel posted four top five finishes in the five meets she competed in.
Bockel mostly ran the 3,000, finishing fifth in what proved to be another collegiate best time of 9:49.01 at the Southeastern Conference Championships. The outdoor season provided more competition for the youngster, picking up a career mark in the 1,500 in Walnut, Calif., of 4:32.76. Her career outdoor mark in the 3,000 was a 9:46.73 also in Walnut.
In her first season of Lady Razorback cross country Bockel posted a collegiate best time of 17:21 at the Chile Pepper (10/14/95) and finished with a time of 17:56 at the Southeastern Conference meet. This fall, Bockel was Arkansas' frontrunner on a young cross country team that finished 14rh at NCAAs. Her best finish was second overall at the Minnesota Quad.
Although a German native, Bockel can lay claim to being a California prepster, spending time in a foreign exchange program at Ojai's Nordhoff High. During her stay in the States, Bockel was the California state champion in cross country as well as seventh at the Kinney West Championships. She finished 26th overall at Kinney Nationals (now Foot Locker) in 1992 as a sophomore at Nordhoff. Bockel brings personal bests of 4:29 in the 1,500, 9:35 in the 3,000 and 17:02 for 5,000 to Arkansas.
Born March 1, 1975, the 21-year-old is the daughter of Elisabeth Bockel.
