Comments: I worked for Gemco in the late 70s, until this asshole Woody Gray guy came and fired me. I retaliated by organizing a theft ring among employees that stole over $150,000 in merchandise from Gemco stores. It was SOOOO easy! The idiot security guards just stood there slack-jawed as I'd walk out with boxes stuffed with guns, jewlery, fishing reels, etc. I used the money to start my own business, and now live the good life! Later, when the Gemc0 closed, I bought a lot of the fixtures cheap! Some of them are still in use at my store! |

Comments: I Think this is a great site dedicated to one stop shopping superstores however i feel that Target stores want to eliminate one stop shopping superstores because every struggling one stop superstore that has been bought out by target stores all they've been interested in are just the buildings not to aquire the companies themselves i don't like target and what they have done to one stop shopping retailers first it was Gemco now they also have put Fedco out of business Whose next? Probably Fred Meyer if they get their dirty paws on them because thats the Last one stop shopping superstore I just wish we could start a new chain of superstores and turn the tables on Target Stores and Start Putting them out of business! |

Comments: Hi there, I just wanted to say I came across your site just by web surfing. Actually had been searching for abandon buildings & closed stores as its interesting. It was very interesting to see a Gemco site, as I used to shop this store all the time. Even applied their once for a job, but ended up at another store now long since gone "Labelle's/Best Products". I do have two things that might be of interest for you to add to your site that I have for Gemco. I have a old going out of business tv commercial, and have a picture of a closed Gemco store with the Gemco sign still on it. Unfortunately that store is now a swapmart which I actually decided to go into as I saw this store built from the ground up, and pretty much still has remenance of a Gemco. The swapmeet still had the meat counter and snack bar area. So was kind of weird going into the swap meet as brought back alot of childhood memories in that store. The actual store sat empty from when they closed until this swap meet opened a couple of years ago. Someone had mentioned about a Fred Meyer's store that sales everything like Gemco. We now have them in Arizona, which they took over a chain called Smitty's. Smitty's & Gemco where the only two stores I could think of like this. Oh I think if I remember right was a store called Fedmart, but way to young to remember much about that store. Well I found your site pretty interesting. If your interested in those two items I have, I'd be glad to send them to you. Michael |

Comments: Gemco was my first job. I worked in the ladies department and I always had so much fun. many of the girls I went to high school with worked there too. Jim Rogers was our #4 and we all worshipped him. he used to call me Miss DaMore. i loved that job as we all became a family. when Jim left Woody took his place and he was such a pain in the ass but by the time he was transferred i loved him too. Cecila was the manager of the childrens dept. she was wonderful and i miss her. I worked with Lois ( my Boss) Jake and Mr. Nemechek. When they all found out i was the neice of Kenny Green who at the time was the grocery buyer for Luckys I was treated alot differently. how I miss Ann Galler, Berta Blue and Debbie Farastopolos and judy furman, what a character. I loved Gemco. if you know any of these people please e mail me.this was 1969 to 1972. I quit to have my son and then went to work for Safeway as a checker. What I do now is so far removed from all of that but what a great experience. Robin Violette and Joanie Pistole where are you???? |

Comments: I remember going to Gemco with my friends on Sat. We too would sneak in by walking next to an adult. I never saw the point of the cards either. Some times, just to bug the person working the front counter, my friends and I would pretend to have a lost friend and ask the girl at the counter to announce the lost friends name over the PA system. I know it doesnt seem like much but we were only nine or ten at the time and it didnt take much to ammuse us. We would do that off and on all day long. Any way I miss the Gemco's too. I havent thought about those stores in years. They were way better than the ones they have now and , more friendly back then too...... |

Comments: I left right after the start of liquidation, but my husband (Scott Mitchell) stayed on till the end. I really miss that store. It was the greatest. I see lots of other stores trying to follow in Gemco's ways, but they just don't come close. Where the heck is customer service. I guess it died with Gemco. The last of the great department stores. |

Comments: I worked on the grocery side in the produce dept. from 82 to 87. I had some of the best times of my life, before, during and after hours. Living on cold cheese burgers and the "Sondo" coffee machine. What a great time! I hope that all are doing well, and thanks to all of those (employees and customers) who are part of the memories. Peace and love, Scott |

Comments: Roy, When I happened to come across your Gemco site I thought it might be possible that you could help me. I am trying to find information concerning a large am/fm stereo turntable which I believe to have been purchased at a Gemco store in Stockton between 1969 and 1973. The stereo was unintentionally sold by a family member and, unfortunately, I don't even know the make, much less the model. This may be a long shot, but I was wondering if you or someone you know might recall which major brands of that type of equipment Gemco would have been carrying during that period so that I might narrow down the possibilities. I would appreciate any information you could give me. Steve |

Comments: Well Marc Davis, you sure brought back some memories: go-backs, #1,#2, etc. I remember a #2 called Joe Mello. And I wonder what cart-boy Rudy is doing now: 130 carts must be a record! And here's an easy trivia question to you all: What was the code used over the P.A. system when an employee needed emergency assistance? |

How did you find the Gemco Site?: | I was cruising through Classmates.com |
Comments: I worked at Gemco twice during my junior and senior years in highschool. Many friends also worked at the store. The dreaded Zody's department store was across the street. My first time through I pushed in carts and did go-backs (remember those). Nothing like coming to work at 5pm to find that your predecessor didn't touch any of the go-back baskets. We used to have contests to see how many carts we could push from the parking lot into the store (blocking all the traffic of course). I remember Rudy pushing in 130 carts! Since the front of the store was an incline the cart pushing wasn't easy. All that fun for $2.97.5 per hour. I wanted to know why the union built in that extra half cent. My second tour of duty in 1978-79 was as a clerk in the toys and housewares department.... during Christmas, HUH! I'll never forget the mess the kids would leave at the end of the day. All in all I had fun working there. I still see a couple of the guys around. The wierdest thing I remember is that the store managers were called #1, #2, #3, #4. I thought that was funny. I think our #1 was Joe Kingston. I can't believe I remember that name. I think the #2 was Rick Tattaglia, or something like that. Great site. I thought people forgot about Gemco. Oh, and I forgot to mention that the Santa Ana Gemco has been a Target for many years and.....MY NIECE WORKS THERE NOW!!!!!!1 |

Comments: Whoa! They actually have a Gemco site! I was surfing the net one day and thought to myself, "They have a lot of old stuff-I wonder if they have anything on Gemco?" -and they did! I was about 7 years old when they went out of business, but I remember they sold Icees and their groceries were Lucky's, generic yellow-and-black and all. Legend has it that Lucky sold Gemco because Gemco was making money and Lucky wasn't, so Lucky sold Gemco so Lucky could make the money. Lucky was later bought by Alpha Beta and all the Northern California Alpha Beta stores became Lucky Stores for the same reason. Years later, Lucky is still losing money because their food is bad and their stores smell. |

Comments: I actually worked for the camera-jewelry dept, which was Gem Distributing. It was a very good place to work during College, although I eventually got tired of the mandatory 6-day week. They were very even-handed. They provided a good living while I went to school. I wonder what ever happened to Irving Haimowitcz and Roger Goldblat. Have run into a few people here and there. I'm also trying to locate Retail Clerks 324. Seems they vested retirement plans after 5 years, and it suddenly occurred to me that I may have a small unclaimed retirement account. I know that 324's offices in Buena Park, CA burned to the ground, anyone know if they still exist or their records still exist? |

I now live in Ojai and was just cruising the net to see what kind of Web Sites were under the "Ojai" category. Roy, you have a very interesting site. I have visited the Room 222 site, really cool, and I am "old enough" to remember watching it and enjoying it just as you described. Besides Karen Valentine, it is too bad you don't have pictures of the other actors involved. I also visited your site dedicated to Kali Manley, and thought it was done very nicely and tastefully. Thanks, Roy, for an interesting Web Site, I will visit again. |
